Henry Baskin Discusses the History of Oakland University.

Oakland University, located in Rochester, Michigan, was founded in 1957. Its enrollment has grown from 570 students in its first year to a current total of nearly 20,000. In addition to the 139 Bachelor’s degree programs, Oakland offers 127 graduate degree or certificate options.

The university began with a $2 million gift from Alfred and Matilda Wilson, along with a donation of their 150-acre estate. When the university opened in 1959, it was called Michigan State University, Oakland, but the name changed in 1963 to Oakland University. The state of Michigan granted the university its autonomy in 1970. Oakland’s alumni network totals nearly 90,000, 75 percent of whom reside in Michigan.

Henry Baskin, an attorney with over 50 years of legal experience in Michigan in the areas of family and entertainment law, served on Oakland University’s Board of Trustees, including four terms as its Chair, and was named Trustee Emeritus to the university.

The TV Program Due Process

Due Process is an Emmy Award-winning television series, currently airing on Detroit public television station WTVS (PBS, Channel 56). Due Process is Michigan’s longest-running public affairs program, reaching viewers in southeastern Michigan and parts of Canada. The program highlights practicing lawyers and legal professionals to explain and discuss the complexity and nuances of federal and state law, covering topics such as bankruptcy, foreclosure, real estate, divorce, homeowners’ law, and much more. Some episodes have included advice from experts on elder law, Social Security, wills and trusts, health insurance, and veterans’ benefits. Other episodes have focused on immigration, foreign trade issues, privacy issues, and intellectual property. Detroit public television has contracted with the producers of Due Process for another 12 episodes in the 2012-2013 season.

Henry Baskin is the host of Due Process, and, since the 1960s, has been one of the leading family law and divorce attorneys in the state of Michigan. Guests that Henry Baskin has invited to the program to offer explanations and advice include Dr. Jack Kevorkian, former Michigan Governor Jennifer Granholm, and F. Lee Bailey, among others.

Oakland University Makes Resolution Honoring Henry Baskin

Henry Baskin, attorney and President of The Baskin Law Firm and the most experienced divorce attorney practicing in the state of Michigan, was recently awarded the status of Trustee Emeritus at Oakland University.

The resolution, recognizing his many contributions, was presented at a recent Board of Trustees Formal Session, and followed sixteen years of service by Baskin on the University’s Board. Baskin’s expertise and commitment have enhanced the University financially, while aiding the Board’s efforts to keep tuition fee increases to a minimum while maintaining Oakland University’s high standard of education.

During his time as a Trustee, Henry Baskin took part in a great number of positive changes in the University. These include participation in the SmartZone program, improvements to the School of Nursing, the addition of a Human Health Building, and the establishment of a scholarship fund for students from single-parent households.

A Look at Motown Records, by Henry Baskin

One of the most important recording companies in music history, Detroit’s Motown Records was founded by Berry Gordy on January 12, 1959. An African-American owned business, Motown Records, or Hitsville U.S.A., brought to the public remarkable songs that broke color barriers for over two decades. The first artist signed to the label was Smokey Robinson, a friend of Gordy and the former lead of The Miracles whose “Shop Around” became Motown’s first hit. In 1960, Motown reached number one for the first time with The Marvelettes’ “Please Mr. Postman.”

Throughout the decade, Motown Records’ catalog included the likes of Martha and the Vandellas, The Jackson 5, The Four Tops, Diana Ross and the Supremes, Stevie Wonder, and other iconic singers. During the 1970s, Motown Records encountered difficulties with its performers and a changing social scene, and Gordy moved it to Los Angeles in 1972. Sixteen years later, he sold it to MCA Records.
